I couldn't imagine a world without a free open-source alternative OS to Windows or OS X.
The thought of being forced to use Windows through anything other than a VM or spare computer, invokes an extreme distaste in me.
I could not imagine my world of personal computing being locked into a restrictive box. The average computer user is not even aware that they are doing their personal computing in a black box, they are not even aware of how restricted they are.
A functional operating system can be composed of a relatively short list of packages, and it is easy to understand what these packages do at a superficial level.
An OS should be compartmentalized into different modular packages. Every computer user should have a basic understanding of major packages that make the OS work. These packages should not be proprietary.
I wish there was a way to make normal people understand why this matters.
It is so hard to make normal people understand why they should care, and how this effects personal computing.
Personal computing is decades behind where it should be, thanks to the monopoly of Windows, which Microsoft gained through anti-competitive business practices, NOT merit.

>>419582If you already know how to compile software, and what packages that comprise a basic working Linux system, then there's really no useful information you'll gain. It would just be time consuming for no reason.
I don't think it's a very practical system either, it would be an extremely time consuming system to upgrade.
I'd recommend either Arch or Fedora. You can install a minimal Fedora system without Xorg.

>>419595I just checked, and LFS is using Eudev, consolekit, and SysVinit.
The purpose of all three of these are now entirely contained within one package, systemd.
If you want to learn how Linux systems used to work a decade ago, and how to build an obsolete Linux system, incompatible with a growing number of Linux software, and plenty of severe bugs that you WILL encounter, then use this.
People who hate systemd have most likely never seen the inside of an old init script, nor the equivalent in systemd, a service file, which is comparatively extremely simple.
They most likely don't even know that they are shell scripts. They've probably never even interacted with their init system.
Shell scripts shipped by distros to start/stop services were madness. Like bubble gum and duct tape.
